A practical guide to get you up and running with Amplitude. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with Amplitude

In this guide, you’ll learn how to set up your Amplitude account and start analysing user behaviour on your product. By the end, you'll be able to track key metrics and gain insights that can inform your product decisions.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to amplitude.com.
  2. Click on the “Get Started” button in the top right corner.
  3. Choose the “Free Plan” and fill in your details to create an account.
  4. Confirm your email address by clicking the link sent to your inbox.
  5. Log in to your account, and you’ll be prompted to set up your first project. Enter your project name and select the relevant industry.

Step 2: Your first analysis

  1. Once logged in, navigate to the “Dashboard” from the left sidebar.
  2. Click on the “Create New Dashboard” button.
  3. Name your dashboard and click “Create”.
  4. To add your first chart, click on “Add Chart”.
  5. Select “Event Segmentation” to analyse user actions.
  6. Choose the event you want to analyse from the dropdown (e.g., “Sign Up”).
  7. Click “Apply” to view the data visualisation and insights.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. Use the “User Segmentation” feature to break down your data by demographics or behaviours. Click on “Segmentation” in the left sidebar, and choose your parameters.
  2. Set up A/B tests by navigating to the “Experiments” tab. Create a new experiment and define your control and variant groups.
  3. Regularly check the “Anomaly Detection” feature to spot unusual patterns in your data, which can indicate issues or opportunities.

Pro tip

Take advantage of Amplitude’s integration with other tools like Slack or Google Analytics. This allows you to receive real-time alerts and updates directly in your preferred communication channels, saving you time on manual checks.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid skipping the setup of user properties and event tracking. Not defining these correctly can lead to incomplete data, making your analysis less effective. Always ensure you have clear events and user properties set up before diving into analytics.
