Getting started with BlackLine

In this guide, you will learn how to set up BlackLine and automate your financial close processes. After reading, you will be able to create transaction reconciliations and streamline your accounting tasks using AI.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to BlackLine's website.
  2. Click on the Get Started button on the homepage.
  3. Fill in your organisation details in the sign-up form, including your name, email address, and company information.
  4. Check your email for a confirmation link and click it to verify your account.
  5. Log in to your new BlackLine account.

Step 2: Your first reconciliation

  1. After logging in, navigate to the Reconciliation tab from the main dashboard.
  2. Click on Create New Reconciliation.
  3. Select the accounts you want to reconcile from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click on Fetch Transactions to import the relevant data.
  5. Review the transactions; BlackLine will automatically match them and highlight discrepancies.
  6. For unmatched items, click on each transaction to review details and make necessary adjustments.
  7. Once satisfied, click on the Save button to finalise the reconciliation.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. Use the Auto-Match feature to let BlackLine suggest matches for transactions, saving you time.
  2. Set up Alerts in the settings to notify you of any discrepancies or issues that need your attention.
  3. Regularly check the Reports section for insights into your reconciliation process and areas for improvement.
  4. Create templates for frequently reconciled accounts to speed up the process.

Pro tip

Take advantage of the Bulk Upload feature for transactions. This allows you to import multiple transactions at once, reducing manual entry time significantly.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid skipping the verification of matched transactions. Always check that BlackLine's AI matches are correct, as relying solely on automation can lead to overlooked discrepancies.
