Getting started with Canva

In this guide, you'll learn how to create stunning designs using Canva's powerful tools, including image generation and background removal. By the end, you'll be able to produce professional-looking graphics quickly and easily.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

1. Go to Canva's website.
2. Click on the “Sign up” button in the top right corner.
3. Choose to sign up using your email, Google, or Facebook account.
4. Follow the prompts to complete the registration. You’ll start on the free plan, which gives you access to many features.

Step 2: Your first design

1. Once logged in, click on the “Create a design” button on the top right.
2. Choose a design type (e.g., Instagram Post, Presentation, etc.) from the dropdown menu.
3. Use the left sidebar to browse templates, or start with a blank canvas.
4. Drag and drop elements from the “Elements” tab, such as shapes, lines, and images, onto your canvas.
5. To add text, click on the “Text” tab and select a text style, then type your content.
6. Click the “Download” button in the top right corner to save your design.

Step 3: Get better results

1. Use the “Background” tab to change the background colour or apply a texture.
2. Experiment with the “Effects” option on images to apply filters or remove backgrounds.
3. For AI-generated images, click “Apps” in the left sidebar, select “Text to Image,” and input your desired prompt.
4. Adjust the size and position of elements for better visual balance.

Pro tip

Use the “Magic Resize” feature (available for Pro users) to instantly resize your design for different platforms. This saves you from having to recreate designs for various formats.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid cluttering your design with too many elements. Stick to a few key visuals and clear text to maintain focus and impact. Use the grid feature to align elements neatly.
