A practical guide to get you up and running with ChatGPT. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with ChatGPT

After reading this guide, you'll be able to set up your ChatGPT account and start using it for writing, coding, and research tasks quickly and effectively.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to chat.openai.com.
  2. Click on the “Sign Up” button in the top right corner.
  3. Enter your email address and create a password, or sign up using Google or Microsoft.
  4. Verify your email address by clicking the link in the confirmation email sent to you.
  5. Log in to your account. You’ll be directed to the ChatGPT interface.

Step 2: Your first conversation

  1. In the input box at the bottom, type a prompt. For example, “Write a poem about autumn.”
  2. Press the “Enter” key or click the paper airplane icon to submit your prompt.
  3. Wait a few seconds for ChatGPT to generate a response. You can scroll up to read the full response.
  4. If you want to refine your request, type additional prompts or ask follow-up questions.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. Be specific with your prompts. Instead of asking for “a summary,” say “summarise the key points of the article on climate change.”
  2. Use system commands like “Explain this in simple terms” or “Provide a list of pros and cons” to guide the output.
  3. You can also use the “Regenerate response” button if you want a different answer to your prompt.

Pro tip

Use the “/” command followed by a keyword (e.g., “/help”) to quickly access various features and commands, saving you time searching through menus.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid vague questions. Instead of asking, “Tell me about history,” specify what aspect of history you want, like “What were the causes of World War I?” This will lead to more relevant and useful responses.
