Getting started with Descript

In this guide, you'll learn how to quickly edit audio and video content using Descript’s text-based editing interface. By the end, you'll be able to create cleaner media projects with ease.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Descript's website.
  2. Click on the "Get started for free" button.
  3. Create an account using your email or sign up with Google.
  4. After verifying your email, log in to your new account.
  5. On your dashboard, choose the "New Project" button to create your first project.

Step 2: Your first edit

  1. Import your audio or video file by clicking on the "Import" button in the top right corner. Select your media file from your computer.
  2. Once imported, Descript will automatically transcribe your audio/video. This may take a few moments.
  3. After transcription, you'll see the text displayed on the left side of the screen. Click on any word you want to remove.
  4. Press the "Delete" key on your keyboard, or right-click and select "Delete." The corresponding audio or video will be removed automatically.
  5. To export your edited file, click on the "Share" button in the top right corner, then select "Export" and choose your desired format.

Step 3: Get better results

  • Use the "Overdub" feature to create voiceovers. Click on the "Overdub" tab, select "Create Overdub Voice," and follow the prompts to record your voice.
  • To improve transcription accuracy, ensure your audio quality is clear and free of background noise.
  • Use the "Screen Recording" feature to capture your screen by clicking on "Record," then selecting "Screen Recording" from the dropdown menu.

Pro tip

To save time, use the keyboard shortcuts: "Cmd + Z" (Mac) or "Ctrl + Z" (Windows) to quickly undo any changes. This can help you experiment without worrying about making permanent mistakes.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid using low-quality audio files, as they can lead to inaccurate transcriptions. Ensure your recordings are clear and at a reasonable volume before importing them into Descript.
