How to Use Figma

A practical guide to get you up and running with Figma. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with Figma

In this guide, you'll learn how to set up Figma and create your first design project. By the end, you'll be able to collaborate with others and use Figma's AI features to make your design process smoother.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Figma's website.
  2. Click on the "Sign up" button in the top right corner.
  3. Choose to sign up with your email or through Google.
  4. Once signed up, you will be taken to your Figma dashboard. If prompted, select the “Starter” plan for free access to up to 3 projects.

Step 2: Your first design project

  1. From your dashboard, click on the "+ New File" button to create a new design file.
  2. In the new file, you'll see a blank canvas. To add a frame, select the "Frame" tool (F) from the toolbar on the left.
  3. Choose a device preset (like iPhone or Web) from the right panel.
  4. Drag and drop shapes and components from the "Assets" panel onto your frame.
  5. To use auto-layout, select a frame or a group of elements, right-click, and choose "Add Auto Layout." Adjust the spacing and alignment options in the right panel.
  6. Once you’re happy with your design, click on the “Share” button in the top right to invite collaborators by entering their email addresses.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. Use the "Plugins" feature by clicking on the "Resources" icon (the four squares) in the top right, then select "Plugins." Here, you can find tools to enhance your workflow, such as content generators or accessibility checkers.
  2. Explore the "Design System" features by creating components. Select an element, right-click, and choose "Create Component." This allows you to reuse elements easily.
  3. Experiment with "Smart Selection" by selecting multiple objects, then using the alignment tools in the top toolbar to organise them efficiently.

Pro tip

Use the "Comments" feature by clicking on the speech bubble icon in the top right. This allows collaborators to leave feedback directly on your design, streamlining the review process.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid creating too many individual elements instead of components. This can lead to a cluttered design file and make updates more time-consuming. Always convert reusable elements into components to keep your designs organised.
