A practical guide to get you up and running with Hotjar. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with Hotjar

In this guide, you'll learn how to set up Hotjar to analyse user behaviour on your website using heatmaps, session recordings, and surveys. By the end, you'll be able to gather valuable insights to improve your site's user experience.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Hotjar's website and click on the "Sign Up Free" button.
  2. Enter your email address and create a password, or sign up using Google.
  3. After verifying your email, you'll be prompted to add your website URL and select your plan. Choose the free plan to start.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Hotjar tracking code on your website. You'll need to copy the provided code snippet and paste it into the <head> section of your website's HTML.

Step 2: Your first heatmap

  1. In your Hotjar dashboard, click on "Heatmaps" from the left-hand menu.
  2. Click the "New Heatmap" button.
  3. Enter a name for your heatmap and specify the URL of the page you want to track.
  4. Set the options for the heatmap, such as the type (click, move, or scroll), and click "Create Heatmap."
  5. Share the heatmap link with your team or wait for data to accumulate before viewing it by clicking on the heatmap name in the dashboard.

Step 3: Get better results

  • To enhance your analysis, regularly check session recordings by clicking on "Recordings" in the left-hand menu. This allows you to watch real users navigate your site.
  • Use the "Surveys" feature to gather direct user feedback. Click "Surveys" and then "New Survey" to create questions that can provide insights into user satisfaction.

Pro tip

Set up custom segments in your recordings by clicking on "Filters" in the recordings section. This lets you focus on specific user behaviours, such as users from a certain country or those who visited a particular page.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid skipping the installation of the tracking code on your website. Without it, Hotjar won't collect any data, making your efforts ineffective. Make sure the code is correctly placed and published before expecting results.
