How to Use HuggingChat

A practical guide to get you up and running with HuggingChat. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with HuggingChat

In this guide, you'll learn how to set up and use HuggingChat, a free and open-source AI chatbot that lets you interact with various advanced language models for generating responses, answering questions, and assisting with creative projects.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to the HuggingChat website.
  2. Click on the "Start chatting" button on the homepage.
  3. You can use HuggingChat without an account, but if you want to save your chat history, click on "Sign in" at the top right corner and create a free Hugging Face account by entering your email and a password.

Step 2: Your first chat

  1. Once you're in, you'll see a text input box at the bottom of the chat window.
  2. Type your message or question into the box and hit "Enter" or click the "Send" button.
  3. The AI will generate a response based on your input. Keep the conversation going by typing follow-up questions or prompts.

Step 3: Get better results

  • Experiment with different prompts to see how the AI responds. For example, instead of asking "What is AI?", try "Explain AI in simple terms for a child."
  • Use specific instructions for creative tasks, such as "Write a short poem about winter" or "Generate a business idea for a coffee shop."
  • You can switch models by clicking on the model selector at the top of the chat window to try different responses based on the model you choose.

Pro tip

Save your favourite chats. If you find a particularly useful conversation, copy it and paste it into a document for future reference. This way, you can build a collection of helpful responses.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid using overly complex or vague questions. The AI performs best with clear and specific prompts. For example, instead of asking "Tell me about technology," specify "What are the latest trends in renewable energy technology?" to get more relevant responses.
