Getting started with Kapwing

In this guide, you will learn how to use Kapwing, a browser-based video editor, to create and edit videos quickly. You’ll be able to add AI-powered subtitles, remove backgrounds, resize videos, and use the Smart Cut feature to enhance your content.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Kapwing's website.
  2. Click on the Sign Up button in the top right corner.
  3. You can sign up using your email or log in with Google. Choose your preferred method.
  4. Once signed up, you’ll be directed to the Kapwing dashboard. The free plan allows you to create videos with a watermark.

Step 2: Your first video edit

  1. On the dashboard, click on the Create New Project button.
  2. Select Upload to add your video file from your device or choose Record to capture a new video.
  3. Once uploaded, you will see your video in the editor.
  4. To add AI-powered subtitles, click on the Subtitles option in the left menu, then select Auto-Subtitle. Choose the language and click Generate.
  5. After the subtitles are generated, you can edit them directly in the timeline.
  6. To remove the background, click on the Effects tab, then select Remove Background.
  7. Finally, click Export in the top right corner to save your video. Choose the free export option to include the watermark.

Step 3: Get better results

  • To use the Smart Cut feature, click on the Smart Cut button in the left menu after uploading your video. This will automatically identify and remove silences, making your video more engaging.
  • For resizing, select the Resize option in the left menu. You can choose from preset dimensions or enter custom dimensions.
  • Remember to adjust the video quality settings before exporting by clicking on Settings during the export process.

Pro tip

Use keyboard shortcuts to speed up your editing process. For example, press Ctrl + Z to undo and Ctrl + S to save your project frequently.

Common mistake to avoid

Many beginners forget to check the export settings before finalising their video. Always review the quality and format options to ensure it meets your needs, especially if you plan to share it on social media.
