How to Use Midjourney

A practical guide to get you up and running with Midjourney. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with Midjourney

In this guide, you'll learn how to create stunning visuals using Midjourney, an AI image generator that works primarily through Discord. By the end, you'll be able to generate impressive images from text prompts in just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Create a Discord account if you don’t have one. Go to discord.com and click on "Sign Up".
  2. Join the Midjourney Discord server. Visit midjourney.com and click on “Join the Beta”. This will redirect you to Discord, where you can accept the invite.
  3. Choose a subscription plan. Once in the server, navigate to the #announcements channel to find information about pricing. Select a plan that suits your needs (Basic, Standard, Pro, or Mega) and follow the payment instructions.

Step 2: Your first image

  1. Navigate to a bot channel. Look for channels named #newbies-1, #newbies-2, etc.
  2. Type your prompt. In the message box, type /imagine followed by your description of the image you want to generate (e.g., /imagine a sunset over a mountain range).
  3. Submit your prompt by pressing Enter. The bot will take a moment to generate your image.
  4. Review the images. Once completed, the bot will display four variations. You can click on any image to enlarge it or use the buttons below to upscale or create variations.

Step 3: Get better results

  • Be descriptive. The more detail you provide in your prompt, the better the outcome. Include specific styles, colours, and elements (e.g., "a futuristic cityscape at night, vibrant neon colours").
  • Use parameters. Add parameters like --ar for aspect ratio (e.g., --ar 16:9) to customise your images further.

Pro tip

Use the /info command in the Discord server to check your usage limits and see how many images you have left for the month. This helps you manage your resources effectively.

Common mistake to avoid

Don’t forget to check your prompt for typos or unclear descriptions. Ambiguous or misspelled words can lead to unexpected results or images that don’t match your vision.
