Getting started with Monte Carlo

In this guide, you will learn how to set up Monte Carlo for data observability, enabling you to monitor your data pipelines effectively and prevent broken dashboards. By the end, you’ll be able to catch anomalies and ensure your data remains reliable.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Monte Carlo's website.
  2. Click on the "Get Started" button located at the top right corner of the homepage.
  3. Fill in your details to create a free account. You may need to verify your email address.
  4. Once logged in, you’ll be directed to the dashboard where you can begin setting up your data sources.

Step 2: Your first data source

  1. From the dashboard, click on the "Data Sources" tab in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click the "Add Data Source" button.
  3. Select the type of data source you want to connect (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery).
  4. Follow the prompts to enter your connection credentials and any required configurations.
  5. Once connected, Monte Carlo will start monitoring your data for anomalies and freshness issues.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. After adding your data source, navigate to the "Monitors" section in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click on "Create Monitor" and choose the type of monitor you want (e.g., freshness, schema).
  3. Set thresholds for alerts (e.g., data freshness should be less than 24 hours).
  4. Configure notifications by selecting how you want to be alerted (email, Slack).
  5. Regularly review the "Insights" section to understand trends and anomalies detected by Monte Carlo.

Pro tip

Set up automated alerts for critical metrics. This way, you won’t have to manually check for issues; you’ll be notified immediately if something goes wrong.

Common mistake to avoid

Many users forget to configure their notification settings after setting up monitors. Ensure you select your preferred alert methods during the monitor setup to avoid missing important updates.
