Getting started with Novelcrafter

In this guide, you will learn how to set up your Novelcrafter account and manage complex fiction storylines effectively. By the end, you will be able to create and organise your narrative elements with ease.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Novelcrafter's website.
  2. Click on the “Sign Up” button located at the top right corner of the homepage.
  3. Fill in your details, including your email address and password, then click “Create Account”.
  4. Verify your email by clicking the link sent to your inbox.
  5. Log in to your new account to access the dashboard.

Step 2: Your first story

  1. On the dashboard, click on the “New Project” button.
  2. Enter your project title and a brief description, then click “Create”.
  3. You will see a blank canvas. Start by clicking the “Add Character” button on the left sidebar to create your first character.
  4. Fill in the character’s details (name, traits, backstory) and click “Save”.
  5. Next, click the “Add Location” button to create a setting for your story. Input the details and click “Save”.
  6. To integrate your character and location, click on the “Plot Points” tab and start outlining your storyline by clicking “Add Plot Point”. Link characters and locations as necessary.

Step 3: Get better results

  • Make use of the “Codex” feature by regularly updating it with new characters, locations, and lore. This helps maintain coherence across your narrative.
  • Use tags for characters and locations to easily filter and find them later.
  • Experiment with the “Story Arcs” feature to visualise how different plotlines intersect.

Pro tip

Regularly back up your project by clicking on the “Export” button in the settings menu. This allows you to save your work as a document, preventing any data loss.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid creating too many characters or locations at once without linking them to your plot. This can lead to confusion and make it harder to maintain coherence in your story. Focus on a few key elements and build from there.
