Getting started with Perusall

In this guide, you will learn how to set up your Perusall account and start annotating documents collaboratively. By the end, you’ll be able to engage with your peers effectively and utilise the AI features to enhance your learning experience.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

1. Go to Perusall's website.
2. Click on the “Sign Up” button in the top right corner.
3. Choose to sign up using your email or connect through Google or Facebook.
4. Fill in your details and complete the registration process.
5. Once logged in, you may be prompted to set up your profile. Add your name, profile picture, and any relevant information.

Step 2: Your first annotation

1. After logging in, click on “Create a Course” or join an existing one by entering the course code.
2. Select “Add a Document” to upload a PDF or link to an online resource.
3. Once the document is uploaded, click on it to open the annotation interface.
4. Highlight text in the document to add comments or questions. A toolbar will appear; click on the “Comment” button to type your annotation.
5. Engage with others by replying to their comments or clicking the “Like” button on annotations you find helpful.

Step 3: Get better results

1. Explore the “Engagement” tab to view how your annotation activity compares to others. This feature uses AI to score your engagement.
2. Use the “Settings” gear icon to adjust notification preferences so you don't miss new comments or replies.
3. Encourage participation by tagging classmates in comments using the “@” symbol followed by their name.
