How to Use Photopea

A practical guide to get you up and running with Photopea. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with Photopea

In this guide, you'll learn how to use Photopea, a free browser-based photo editor that offers features similar to Adobe Photoshop. By the end, you’ll be able to edit images efficiently and access advanced tools without needing to install any software.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Open your web browser and go to Photopea.com.
  2. Click on "Start" to open the editor directly. There’s no need to sign up for a free account, but if you want to remove ads, consider clicking on the "Upgrade" button at the top right to subscribe for $5/month.
  3. Familiarise yourself with the interface, which resembles Photoshop, featuring layers, tools on the left, and options on the top.

Step 2: Your first image edit

  1. Click on “File” in the top menu and select “Open” to upload an image from your computer or choose “Open from URL” to edit an online image.
  2. Use the toolbar on the left to select the “Move Tool” (the arrow icon) and reposition your image as needed.
  3. To apply basic edits, go to “Image” in the top menu. Here, you can adjust brightness, contrast, and more.
  4. To add text, select the “Text Tool” (the T icon), click on your image, and type your text. You can change the font and size in the options bar above.
  5. Once you're satisfied with your edits, click “File” and select “Export As” to save your image in the desired format (e.g., PNG, JPG).

Step 3: Get better results

  1. Explore the “Filters” menu at the top for various effects like blurring or sharpening your image.
  2. Use layers effectively by clicking on the “Layers” panel on the right. You can create new layers for different elements, making it easier to edit without affecting the entire image.
  3. Experiment with the “Adjustment Layers” option in the Layers panel for non-destructive edits. This allows you to tweak colours and tones without permanently changing your original image.

Pro tip

Use keyboard shortcuts to speed up your workflow. For example, press “Ctrl + Z” to undo actions quickly, and “Ctrl + T” to transform selections. Familiarising yourself with these can save you a lot of time.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid working directly on your original image. Always create a new layer for edits or duplicate the original layer. This way, you can revert changes without losing your initial work.
