Getting started with Tawk.to

In this guide, you'll learn how to set up Tawk.to for your business and implement its live chat feature with an AI assistant that answers customer queries. By the end, you'll be ready to engage with your customers effectively.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to tawk.to.
  2. Click on the “Sign Up Free” button in the top right corner.
  3. Fill in your email and create a password, or sign up using a Google or Facebook account.
  4. After confirming your email, log in to your new account.
  5. Follow the setup wizard to add your website details and choose your chat widget's appearance.
  6. Click on “Save Changes” to complete the setup.

Step 2: Your first chat

  1. In the Tawk.to dashboard, click on “Chat Widget” in the left sidebar.
  2. Copy the provided JavaScript code snippet.
  3. Paste this code into the HTML of your website, just before the closing </body> tag.
  4. Go back to the Tawk.to dashboard, and click on “Chat” in the left sidebar.
  5. Start a chat with yourself by visiting your website; you'll see the chat widget in action.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. To set up the AI Assist, click on “Admin” in the left sidebar, then select “Chatbots”.
  2. Click on “Add a Bot” and choose the option to create a bot from your knowledge base.
  3. Upload your FAQs or important documents that the AI can use to answer customer queries.
  4. Adjust the bot settings to determine when it should respond (e.g., when agents are offline).
  5. Test the bot by asking it common questions to ensure it pulls from your knowledge base effectively.

Pro tip

Take advantage of Tawk.to's “Triggers” feature under the “Admin” menu. Set up triggers to automatically send messages based on customer actions, like visiting a specific page. This can help you engage proactively.

Common mistake to avoid

Many users forget to customise their chat widget's appearance. Make sure to adjust colours and texts in the “Chat Widget” settings to align with your brand, which helps in creating a more professional and cohesive customer experience.
