Getting started with Filmora AI

In this guide, you'll learn how to start editing videos using Filmora AI, an accessible desktop video editor with powerful AI features. By the end, you'll be able to create polished videos with smart cutouts, motion tracking, and auto-reframing for various formats.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Visit Filmora's website.
  2. Click on the “Download” button for your operating system (Mac or Windows).
  3. Install the software by following the on-screen instructions.
  4. Launch Filmora and create a free account by clicking on “Sign Up.” You can also choose to log in using your Google or Facebook account.
  5. Choose the free version, which includes a watermark on exported videos, or consider the annual ($49.99) or perpetual ($79.99) plans if you want to remove it.

Step 2: Your first video edit

  1. Open Filmora and click on “New Project.”
  2. Click on the “Import” button to add your video clips from your computer.
  3. Drag and drop your video onto the timeline at the bottom.
  4. To use the smart cutout feature, select your video in the timeline, then go to the “Effects” panel on the left and find “AI Portrait.”
  5. Click on “Add” to apply the effect, and adjust the settings to refine the cutout.
  6. If you want to add text, click on the “Text” tab, choose a style, and drag it to the timeline above your video.
  7. Click on “Export” in the top right corner to save your video. Choose your format and quality, then click “Export” again.

Step 3: Get better results

  • For motion tracking, select the clip in the timeline, and click on the “Motion Tracking” button in the toolbar. Follow the prompts to select the object you want to track and apply effects accordingly.
  • Use the “Auto-Reframe” feature by selecting your video, clicking on the “Edit” button, and then choosing “Auto-Reframe.” Select your desired aspect ratio (e.g., 16:9 for YouTube or 9:16 for Instagram) to adapt your video automatically.
  • Experiment with the templates available under the “Templates” tab for quick transitions and effects.
