Getting started with Clipchamp

In this guide, you will learn how to quickly start using Clipchamp, Microsoft's free online video editor. You'll be able to create and edit videos with ease, including adding AI captions and text-to-speech features.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to Clipchamp's website.
  2. Click on the "Sign up" button in the top right corner.
  3. You can sign up using your Microsoft account, Google account, or email. Choose your preferred method and follow the prompts.
  4. Once signed up, you will be taken to the dashboard where you can start a new project.

Step 2: Your first video edit

  1. On the dashboard, click the “Create a video” button.
  2. Select a template or choose “Start from scratch” for a blank project.
  3. Upload your media by clicking the “+” icon in the Media section or drag and drop files directly into the library.
  4. Drag your video files to the timeline at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Use the toolbar on the left to trim, split, or adjust clips. Click on a clip in the timeline to reveal editing options.
  6. To add text, click on the “Text” tab, select a style, and drag it onto the timeline.
  7. To add AI captions, click on the “Captions” tab and follow the prompts to generate captions automatically.
  8. Once you’re happy with your video, click the “Export” button in the top right corner and choose your desired quality.

Step 3: Get better results

  • Experiment with the “Transitions” tab to add smooth transitions between clips.
  • Use the “Audio” tab to add background music or voiceovers. You can also use the text-to-speech feature by selecting a text box, clicking the “Audio” icon, and choosing a voice.
  • Adjust video settings like brightness and contrast by clicking on the clip in the timeline and selecting “Adjust” from the toolbar.

Pro tip

Use the “Shortcuts” feature found in the Help menu to learn keyboard shortcuts for speeding up your editing process. For example, pressing "S" will split a clip at the playhead.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid skipping the preview step before exporting. Always play through your video to catch any errors or awkward cuts that you might miss while editing.
