How to Use ToolJet

A practical guide to get you up and running with ToolJet. Written by Delv Editorial, Delv Team.

Getting started with ToolJet

In this guide, you will learn how to set up ToolJet and create your first internal tool or dashboard quickly. By the end, you’ll be able to connect data sources and build applications without coding.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

  1. Go to ToolJet's website.
  2. Click on the "Sign Up" button in the top right corner.
  3. Enter your email address and create a password, or sign up using Google.
  4. Confirm your email by clicking the link sent to your inbox.
  5. Log in to ToolJet.
  6. You will land on the dashboard. Here, you can start a new project by clicking the “Create New App” button.

Step 2: Your first app

  1. After clicking “Create New App,” select a template or choose “Blank App” to start from scratch.
  2. In the app builder, you’ll see a drag-and-drop interface. Click on the “Data” tab on the left sidebar.
  3. Click “Add Data Source” and choose from one of the 80+ connectors (e.g., MySQL, Google Sheets).
  4. Follow the prompts to connect your chosen data source by entering the necessary credentials.
  5. Once connected, drag components from the “Widgets” panel (e.g., Table, Chart) onto the canvas.
  6. Click on a component to configure its settings in the right sidebar, selecting the data source you just added.

Step 3: Get better results

  1. Use natural language prompts in the “Query” section to fetch data easily (e.g., “Show me sales data for the last month”).
  2. Experiment with different widgets to visualise your data effectively. For example, use a Chart widget for trends and a Table widget for detailed views.
  3. Set up filters and parameters in the data settings to allow users to interact with the data dynamically.

Pro tip

Use the “Preview” button at the top right of the app builder to see how your app looks and functions in real-time. This can save you time in making adjustments before publishing.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid skipping the data source connection step. Many beginners try to add widgets without first connecting to a data source, leading to confusion and errors when building the app. Make sure to establish your data connections first.
