Getting started with Whimsical

In this guide, you will learn how to create flowcharts, wireframes, and mind maps using Whimsical. By the end, you'll be able to visualise your ideas and collaborate with your team effectively.

Step 1: Sign up and set up

1. Go to whimsical.com.
2. Click on the Sign Up button in the top right corner.
3. Choose to sign up with your email, Google, or Slack account.
4. Complete the verification process if required.
5. Once signed up, you'll be taken to your dashboard where you can start a new project.

Step 2: Your first flowchart

1. Click on the + New Document button on your dashboard.
2. Select Flowchart from the options presented.
3. Drag and drop shapes from the left panel onto the canvas.
4. Connect shapes by clicking on a shape, then dragging a connection line to another shape.
5. Double-click on shapes to edit text and add labels.
6. Use the Export button in the top right to download your flowchart as PNG or PDF.

Step 3: Get better results

1. Use the Templates button to access pre-made designs that can save you time.
2. Experiment with the AI Assistant feature to generate ideas or suggestions for your flowchart.
3. Collaborate in real-time by inviting team members via the Share button. You can set permissions for editing or viewing.

Pro tip

Use keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl + D (or Cmd + D on Mac) to duplicate shapes quickly, speeding up your workflow.

Common mistake to avoid

Avoid neglecting the Save feature. While Whimsical automatically saves your work, it's good practice to manually save your document after significant changes to ensure nothing is lost.
